Phase 1. Preliminary Bowl Designs!

Here are 4 very preliminary bowl designs drawn and donated by Dreamland Skateparks. We are seeking your input for phase 1 (swimming pool style bowl) of our plan of expansion and improvements to the Eric Scott McKinley Skatepark in Corvallis. The BCSA is working in partnership with the City of Corvallis, Parks and Recreation Department on possible site locations to the west of the multi use path close to the existing skatepark. What do you like or dislike about these designs? Keep in mind that this is only the phase 1 and it will be a swimming pool style skateboarding bowl. Additional street terrain including stairs, rails, ledges etc… and lighting and other facilities will be included in phase 2 of our plan.
A. ~3500 sq. ft. B. ~4000 sq. ft. C. ~4000 sq. ft. D. ~4500 square feet.
That’s awesome that Dreamland is helping you guys out.
Are the bowls from smallest to biggest? If so give us a run down on how big each one is. I do like the “D” bowl but I think it has too many elements in it that would encourage multiple users taking runs at the same time. The existing park is a good example of this on a larger scale. It would be nice that whatever bowl gets built that it naturally pushes single use runs. pools=waterfalls and deathboxes
The square footages are very rough…our goal for phase 1 is a feature that would provide the feel of a legit swimming pool style bowl session. This would push “single use runs” and provide a less chaotic feel. This would allow riders to focus on their run with no worries of an unexpected encounter with another rider. Even with one person riding the bowl at a time this feature would still by usable by a relatively large number of people over the course for the day.
Those plans look pretty good. I don’t have a lot of input to offer. It seems like anything Dreamland builds will be heads and shoulders above what we have now, which really, aint that bad when you think about it.
I just have to say (again) that if the existing park were 100% covered we could all be skating right now instead of driving to the beach or mountains to get a boarding fix. Also I think the new park, if there is one, should be sited to the east of the basketball court. Again, you’re taking advantage of the extensive bridge covering, you still have good drainage to the river (assuming no catastrophic flood) and the area is already kind of a dirt patch as opposed to a healthy meadow-like area that is west of the current park.
The one big problem about going east of the basketball court is that it is in a “floodway”. Doing any fill and/or removal project in a floodway requires approvals from the Army Core of Engineers (ACOE). Getting approvals to work in the floodway requires a lot of additional work, time and money to have consultants a write report that can demonstrate there will be no net raise in flood water as a result of the project. The ACOE would then review the report and then may or may not approve of the project. We did approach the city about the area where the basketball court is and that idea was shot down.
